Black & White

Background.

In the article by John Bertram, These Events Did Not Occur in Black & White, he provides a brief overview about a collection of twelve stories written by Tadeusz Borowski called “This Way for the Gas, Ladies, and Gentlemen.” This collection of stories is based between 1945 and 1948 and on Borowski’s experiences as a "political" prisoner in various Nazi concentration camps between 1943 and 1945. Bertram then goes into great detail regarding the original cover designs for these twelve stories and how they depict the stories behind them.

Strategy.

Most would design this with a common visual language using black and white imagery, black letter text, grungy effects; all to give a very distinct picture for the reader. However, I was inspired by how David Gee chose to use color to emphasize that these events happened on beautiful days as often as they did on overcast, grey, and gloomy days.
